Our last experiences on Lanai were on a Sierra Club outing, camping there on a beach for a week. At that time the Island was one large pineapple plantatiion with one small town. Since then it has changed owners several times and has developed some upscale resorts. My opinion is the reasons to go there are 1) try to get away from tourist congestiion on other islands and 2) add another island "trophy" to your collection.
Molokai is another island far removed from the hustle and bustle of the major tourist destinations. Our last experience there was in 2000 on a Sierra Club outing. Way back in 1981 we enjoyed the mule trip down to Kalaupapa, a very beautiful and poignant location. It is now a national historical park but visitation to the Peninsula is very restricted.
Although it toutes itself as the "Friendly Island" we encountered some definite indications that visitors were unwelcome in some locations as there are stong sovereignity sentiments there.
