Following are some Hawaiian websites of interest
There is a wealth of information on the web from and about Hawaii. It seems you can
simply go to any hawaiian_name.com and pick up a site. The following list of links is far
from exhaustive but they are some that this author has found entertaining and useful. Use
your web browser's "back" command to return to this site.
- The
Bishop Museum
- The Bishop Museum is arguably the best resource for Hawaiian culture, especially that
related to pre-European history in the Islands. A visit to the Museaum in Honolulu is
strongly recommended.
- Hawaii Visitors Bureau
- An extensive website to attract visitors to Hawaii. It has some emphasis on commercial
aspects, but nevertheless provides an extensive introduction to the Islands. Its page on Island
highlights. takes you to photos and info about each island.
- The National Tropical Botanical Garden
- The National Tropical Botanical Garden is dedicated to discovering, saving, and studying the world's tropical plants and to sharing what is learned. You can visit several of their sites in the Islands.
- Nat'l Wildlife Refuges in Hawaii
- Learn about the National Wildlife Refuges within the Hawaiian Islands. This side
encompases the entire U.S., so when the website appears click on "Addresses"
along the left side of the page; in the resulting page, enter 'HI' in the "Search by
State" field. You will be presented with all the refuges in the state.
- Hawaii State Division of
Forestry
- Learn about State Forestry Preserves: places, trails, etc. If you want to do further
research on state reserves, you might start at the Department
of Land and Natural Resources.
- Virtually
Hawaii
- Includes a "virtual"
field trips of the Islands with lots of photos. It is brought to you by researchers at
the University of Hawaii with government and private sponsors.
- Websites for National Park sites in the Islands
- Big Island information
- General travel information about the Big Island. Includes a number of webcams.
- Hawaiian Electric Kitchen
- Brought to you by the Hawaiian Electric Company. Lots of good stuff here. Updated
frequently but with archives of past recipes.
- "Da Kine" recipes from Univ. of Hawaii
- Recipes representing the rich variety of cultures in the Islands. Get that Spam misube
recipe here.
